NIkki Sixx Photography I'm a Recovering addict.Camera's are my new drug.

It was just about that magic hour for photography.Depending on where you are on the planet, somewhere right before sunset (Usually 5-9 pm)…It was around 7pm in Winnipeg Canada and I saw this young lady sitting at a stop sign waiting for a driver to stop so she could hold out her hand and ask for a helping hand.Problem was,it was Sunday and the streets were dead.As i was giving her a bit of money this young kid came up ( not more than 16 ) and said this is his territory and i had to pay him to shoot in this part of town.I laughed at him and said the only person getting money today was this girl.He looked surprised.I looked away.

I met Patrick outside the Main Street Project in Winnipeg Canada today.I asked what he was doing and he simply said ‘WAITING’.He kept staring straight ahead.I took a few pictures and when we were done we said our goodbye’s but for some reason I stopped, turned around to look back at him and this is what i saw.”A man so focused on the door of a building that nothing and i mean nothing else really mattered”.They were about to open to door’s to take people in for the night, shower and feed them. The complete desolation of this shot touched me.The man walking in the background has a story too but i am sure Patrick could care less,he only had one thing on his mind.

Woke up this morning in the bus parked outside the venue in Estevan Canada. As I was pouring my usual morning cup of coffee I opened the curtains to see that we were parked in the middle of a dirt lot with nothing much around us except some train tracks off in the distance. To the left of the bus I noticed a small skatepark with kids doing what they should be doing on a quiet weekend in the middle of nowhere but one of the kids appeared to not have any legs.As I later found out his name is Alex and he lost both his feet at age 1 and his legs (up to the knee caps ) at age 2.His personality beamed with enthusiasm when I asked if I could get some shots of him doing some tricks. We sat and talked for a while and he told me he drag races & horse back rides too.I told him about a girl I shot in Los Angeles who had lost her legs and how she is still a snowboarder and all around great athlete. He asked me if I wanted to see his prosthetic legs and we went over to his truck. It turns out he had them airbrushed with hot rod flames ( see picture ) and I told him he really had heart. At that point he pulled back his shirt to expose a heart tattooed on his chest.I meet new people everyday and somedays I walk away and think I just wasted 20 minutes of my life. Not today.I feel inspired.Thank you Alex….

I was lurking in the shadow of a tall building on Hollywood Blvd.Honestly i was focused on a shot i wanted of a this old couple at the bus stop 15 feet away and nothing else.I had my camera set to hyper-focus as this lady walked around the corner none to happy to see me pointing my camera in her direction.I just pushed the shutter release without framing. It seemed like i invaded her space and honestly,i probably did.I think this moment shows what she was thinking..

I met Lilly trying to sleep off her life in Pigeon Park downtown Vancouver.People were looming around, some still high and others waiting for the connection to show up.She had the whole bench taken up between her bag of clothes and her out stretched body and seemed unconcerned that people needed a place to sit.Her hair was cut short to her head, but not for ease of care. When the female addicts don’t make good with their drug debts the dealers shave their heads to send the message the other woman what happens if you don’t pay up.I am sure that was the least of her problems but it somehow added to the sorrow.

I had been walking the streets of Sydney trying to fight off the jet lag when i ran into this gentleman. His demeanor seemed somewhat monk like to me as i asked if he minded if i snapped a few quick photos..As we were talking people walked by not even slowing down to throw a few coins into his basket.I found it odd and he said that’s usually the way it goes.I asked him if he had ever been to any other countries and he said no,he’s has never left Australia and time has been rough on him.He asked where i was from and i told him Los Angeles. He said it seemed so far away from where he was and sadly looked off into the distance. This is that moment.

Today I spent some time in Hollywood with the sole intention of documenting people at bus stops. With all the subjects i spent time talking to them, asking them where they are from and where are they going.

These 3 photos are from a bus stop on Hollywood Blvd.He saw me walking up and down the street and as I finally made my way towards him asking what was his name,he simply said “Mr.Jones”.He had a southern drawl and was dressed to the nines. So,with a quick exchange of pleasantries and some money we began to shoot. As usual, I am full of questions and when i asked if he was from Hollywood he said HELL NO.He came out west for a woman. He was from Tennessee. She had turned him into the government because he had proof that both men and woman can give birth to children, so now he is on the run. He told me how it works but to be honest with you he was using words that either didn’t exist or was above my head.

When i said goodbye he said thank you, I said for what and he said for taking his picture.

These next 3 photos are from a bus stop in Hollywood. The man & woman in the photos are named Tess and James.Tess is 65 and James is 55.Tess’s best friend since childhood had just passed away and she said she hadn’t been to sleep in 3 days. James was there for her emotional support. Tess told me James has been her friend for over 20 years as she rubbed his arm. As i was taking photo’s she broke down and started crying again. She told me her son used to be a photographer and I reminded her of him. We sat for a while. They are from San Francisco and said they we’re heading to Echo Park.

This photo is of Jasmine (reading a Ben Harper book ).She was waiting at a bus stop on Sunset blvd. She was from Hollywood but wouldn’t tell me where she was going. She was coy and cute yet distant. I couldn’t really connect with her. She was happy i gave her money and even happier when i walked away…
